Epic Finish at Hatley Castle 8k
|
Today, at the Hatley Castle 8K, the 200+ spectators at the finish line were treated to the closest, most thrilling race in the 26-year history of the Island Series with two Harriers finishing 1/100th of a second apart! In horse racing a photo finish shows which horse won by a nose. In track racing, a photo finish shows which runner won the 100 metre race by his torso crossing the line. Horse races and track races are usually won by fractions of a second. Today we needed a photo finish at Royal Roads to determine whether Eric Findlay or Nick Walker actually won Race #4 in the eight-race Frontrunners Island Series. The finish-line judge gave the nod to Eric who out-leaned Nick to take the victory. Both were timed in 26:28, twenty-three seconds ahead of bronze-medalist Stephen Kilshaw. Within the last 50 metres of the race the lead changed hands five times with either Eric of Nick surging to pull 1/2 second or so ahead of each other. With 5 metres to go, both were stride-for-stride, shoulder to shoulder and torso-to-torso. Eric's 1/100th second triumph gave him his second overall victory at Hatley Castle as he won the race last year in 26:09.
